

Dr Sonia Ashraf
Sonia graduated from Medicine in London and completed her GP training on the Oxford VTS scheme. She then practiced as a GP in Buckinghamshire before becoming a GP partner in Birmingham at a large south Birmingham practice. She currently sits on the Birmingham LMC board and is a GP Appraiser. She took up commissioning as the Central Locality Lead GP on the Governing Body forming part of Birmingham and Solihull CCG and was vice-chair of Quality and Safety. With the formation of Birmingham and Solihull ICB, she has taken on the role of Medical Director of Cancer where she has been involved in a number of pathway redesign and transformational work for urgent suspected cancer referrals as well as opening GP direct access to imaging to allow cancers to be diagnosed early. This included GP direct access to brain imaging, providing primary care direct access to CT and brain MRI. For just under four years she was also the Non-Executive Director for Black Country ICB where she was chair of quality and safety.
Sonia is currently the Deputy Clinical Director for the West Midlands Cancer Alliance, which is the largest Cancer Alliance in England, covering 6 ICBs where she leads on disseminating national cancer priorities. She works with the 20 expert advisory groups for each cancer tumour type, the GP cancer leads and clinical pathway leads to pilot and design new cancer pathways as new evidence emerges. She is also now responsible for ensuring the ambitious 10 year NHS Cancer plan is delivered.
